ANNUAL REPORT
I have been in post as Senior Chaplain for almost four years although this is my third Annual Report. I begin by thanking our President Bishop Jack and the ACU Council, my fellow Chaplains and all the faithful members of the ACU and Libby our Administrator. I am also grateful for the various partnerships that have been estab-lished over many years.
For the support of the Combined Theatrical Charities who this year have supported with a generous grant for our continued work with the Children‘s Charity and the Training programme for Chaplains. We had two very successful Chaplaincy training days attended by Chaplains from all around the country as well as from London‘s West End. They were joined by actors, company manager and a theatre manager.. and special thanks to Libby for admin and glorious food! And to Vicky Burgess and Janine Gillion Churchwardens at St Saviours Intermission. Another training day is to be arranged in the autumn.
I managed to meet with some of the Area Chaplains this year hosting a number of them before the
Patronal Festival.
However I did promise to visit our branch in Ireland and this I did last year and spent the day
encouraging ACU Ireland in their future work. I am delighted to report that the Chaplaincies are growing in strength with which I am delighted, and I am sorry they are not able to be with us at this AGM this year.
Every year we join with the Catholic Theatre Guild for our joint Carol Service and we do appreciate this partnership and will be joining them this coming Christmas.
The Patronal Service is always another highlight of our year and it was a delight to welcome President Bishop Jack again to preside and preach, and much enjoyed the wonderful entertainment from Nickolas Grace and the Covent Garden Ballet School.
I also want to thank on your behalf The Rev Simon Grigg, and his team for his support for the ACU on the Council and as Rector of St Pauls Covent Garden, along with Charles the Administrator.
Thank you to the Royal Opera House for their kindness and support, and to Raymond Ramsden their Chaplain and our prayers are offered for his wife who is in Papworth hospital.
Thanks to Alison Woodnutt for doing Intercessions and welcome her as a new Council member, and John Dalby for accompanying us on the piano.
To welcome Rev Graham Rainford, and Rev. Lindsay Meader to the Council.
I would ask you to remember with thanksgiving those who have died including long standing Council member Nicholas Courtney, who amongst other roles played Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart in Dad‘s Army. The Memorial service will be held on Friday July 15th at St Paul‘s Church, Covent Garden. Also David Dalrymple who has been a member of the ACU.
Children‘s Charity – Had some very good reports and had a useful meeting with TACT.
I am also very grateful to Andrew Payne our Treasurer who has done sterling work with our accounts, and as a Trustee for the Children‘s Charity and as you noted from his report we have come through these difficult times extremely well thanks to his support and the expert advice of Roger Marx our Financial Adviser.
Having worked very hard on researching and designing a website for the ACU it has been successfully launched and we have received very encouraging comments. There is still more to be done.
In conclusion I would like to say how important I believe our work is for the Church and the Theatre, both in terms of pastoral care, mission and financial assistance and hope that we can carry that work on to the best of our ability with the help of God in the coming years. I am also suggesting that I ought to think of resigning as your Senior Chaplain next year as I believe five years is a good innings. I hope you will consider a successor in the year to come.
The Reverend Rob Gillion, Senior Chaplain
